Retro pixel ARPG browser game with classes, towns, loot, and online play
So I made a game in about a week for about 700$ worth of tokens with Claude. Opus 5.5 came out and changed the face of gaming forever.
Some of you know I've been building Funkatron for years. It's my world. Kingdoms, gods, trade goods, geography, a whole cast of ridiculous characters, more lore docs than I could ever fit anywhere. It's been in maps, tools, a fishing game, my streams. For a long time I've wanted to make a real dungeon crawler set in it, like the games I sank my whole life into: Diablo 2, Ragnarok Online, old WoW.
Last week I sat down with Claude (Opus 5.5) and just started. I dumped everything I had into it. All the lore, the kingdoms, the trade goods, the map, the names, the jokes. About seven days and something like 36 versions later we've got a playable mmo! Wild.
It's called Funkatron: Descent of the Iron Choir. It's a retro pixel ARPG, and you play it free in your browser.
There are 8 classes, each with full skill trees, and they're as weird as you'd expect from me. There's a big town to start in, open zones to explore, a harbor town, a coffee shop you can walk into, and a dungeon that goes down basically forever. It has fishing, gathering, loot, weather, and day and night. It's online too, so you'll see other people running around, and you can group up, trade, or flag for PvP. It even ties into Boardwalker. The calendar and the economy are shared between the two games.
I made the leveling slow on purpose. Max level is 99, and after the first few levels it's a real grind, the old school kind. I want it to be something me and my audience come back to for months.
The part that still gets me is how fast it came together. The world took me years. The game took about a week. I did the dreaming and the deciding, and Claude did the heavy lifting on the code. I don't know how else a solo guy like me would ever get to make something this size.
